5 TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP TO HAWAI’I

Dreaming of swaying palm trees, turquoise waters, and golden sunsets? Before you pack your bags for paradise, here are a few things to know that will help you make the most of your Hawaiian adventure — and show respect for the islands’ unique culture and environment.

1.

Respect the ʻĀina (Land)

Locals have a deep connection to the ʻāina — the land. Stay on marked trails, avoid touching coral reefs and don’t take lava rocks or sand home. The islands thrive when visitors travel with care. Refrain from touching or getting too close to the wildlife, turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected by federal and state laws. Give them plenty of space.

2.

Skip Single-Use Plastics

Bring a reusable water bottle and make sure what you pack in, you pack out. Many islands are phasing out plastic to protect marine life, so you’ll fit right in with eco-conscious locals. If you see any trash along the way feel free to do you part and dispose of it properly.

3.

Learn a Few Hawaiian Words

A warm “Aloha” (hello/goodbye/love) and “Mahalo” (thank you) go a long way! Learning even a few words shows respect for Hawaiian culture and deepens your connection to the islands.

4.

Pack for Island Life

Think lightweight clothes, reef-safe sunscreen, comfortable sandals and a rain jacket — tropical showers happen! If you plan to hike or snorkel, bring gear that won’t harm the environment. On a side note, if your sunscreen says “reef safe” but still has Avobenzone in it, it’s not safe. Purchase your sunscreen on island to be sure.

5.

Take It Slow

Island time is real! Don’t try to cram too much into one day. Relax, breathe, and enjoy the rhythm of the islands — that’s where the real magic of Hawaii lies.
